Your must-play songs: how to share them with your wedding DJ

Couples often worry about how to hand over their music to a DJ. Should they send a long list? A link to a streaming playlist? The good news is that it is much simpler than people expect, and a little structure helps a lot.

Three simple lists

The most useful thing you can give me is not a huge list, it is a focused one. I ask couples for three things.

Your must-play songs

First, your must-play songs. These are the tracks that absolutely have to be in the evening: the first dance, the songs tied to your story, the ones your families expect. A short, clear list of these matters far more than hundreds of options.

Second, your no-go list. This is just as important. Tell me the songs, or even the styles, you never want to hear at your wedding. Knowing what to avoid protects the evening as much as knowing what to play.

Third, anything special from home. If there are songs in your own language, or tracks that carry a particular memory for your family, send those to me in advance. I will place them where they genuinely fit the flow of the night, at the right moment, rather than dropping them in at random.

Leave the timing to me

Important requests from guests can be prepared in advance too, and I will put them where they work. What I gently steer couples away from is trying to script the entire evening track by track. A wedding floor is a living thing, and the best results come when a focused plan meets a DJ who is watching the room and reacting to it.

So when the time comes to share your music, keep it simple. A clear must-play list, an honest no-go list, and your special songs from home. Give me those, and leave the timing and the reading of the room to me.

If you would like to talk through your wedding music, I am happy to help.
