DJ, live band or a Spotify playlist for your wedding
When couples plan the music for their wedding, they usually weigh up three options: a DJ, a live band, or simply running their own playlist from a phone. All three can work, and I think it is only fair to be honest about what each one actually gives you.
A playlist from a phone
A playlist is the simplest and cheapest option, and for a small, relaxed gathering it can be enough. The limit is that a playlist cannot read the room. It does not know when the floor has gone quiet, when to hold a style a little longer, or when to change direction. It plays what you decided weeks ago, regardless of what is happening in front of it. Someone also has to watch it all evening, manage the volume, and handle the microphone for speeches.
A live band
A live band brings energy and a wonderful sense of occasion. The trade-offs are cost, the space and power they need, and the fact that a band plays its own repertoire, with breaks, rather than the full span of songs your mixed guests might want across a whole evening.
A DJ, and the best of both
A DJ sits in the middle, and this is of course where I stand. I can cover decades of music for a mixed, international crowd, follow the room in real time, and handle the sound and the microphone for your key moments, all from one compact setup. And if you love the idea of a live touch, it does not have to be either or. A singer, a guitarist or a saxophonist can connect straight to my mixer and play alongside the set, so you get the flow of a DJ with a moment of live colour when it counts.
There is no single right answer, it depends on your guests, your venue and the feel you want. But if you want music that adapts to your evening as it happens, with the option of a live moment on top, a DJ is usually the most flexible choice.
If you would like to talk through what would suit your wedding best, I am glad to help.
