How many songs really play at a wedding, and why a giant playlist is a myth
One of the first things couples ask me is whether they should build a huge playlist for the evening. It is a fair question, and the honest answer surprises people.
The simple maths of an evening
A wedding party in Cyprus usually runs from about six in the evening to midnight. That is around six hours, and it is the base of what I do. In that time, roughly a hundred songs actually play. That is the simple maths of an evening. So a playlist of several thousand tracks is not only unnecessary, it is impossible to play through. The night will only ever hold about a hundred moments.
This changes the whole question. It is not the length of the list that matters, it is whether the right hundred songs play, in the right order, matched to the room and the moment. A shorter, focused selection is far more useful to me than an endless one, because it tells me what you love without drowning the evening in options.
How to share your music with me
Here is how I like to work with couples. Send me a focused list of your must-play songs, the ones that have to be in the evening. Send me the tracks you absolutely do not want to hear, which is just as important. And if there are special songs from home, or in your own language, send those too, and I will place them where they belong, not dropped in at random. The rest I build on the night, watching who is dancing and what is genuinely working.
A playlist versus a DJ
This is the difference between running a playlist and building an evening. A fixed list cannot feel the room. It does not know that the floor has gone quiet, or that one more song in a certain style would bring everyone back. I follow the night in blocks that build on one another, and I change direction when the room asks for it, not after every single track.
So when you plan your wedding music, do not worry about quantity. A hundred well chosen songs, in the right hands and the right order, will carry your evening far better than a list you spent weeks filling. Tell me your favourites and your no-go list, and leave the timing to me.
